| My name is Alan Betts and I am the MD of Sigma (IT) Ltd. Sigma (IT) Ltd was established in 2000 to provide IT training services and FileMaker development for small businesses initially. Today Sigma is still only employing one person - me - and still providing IT training and FileMaker development for businesses - but not necessarily small anymore. My background is that, back when digital watches were still a pretty neat idea, I worked in various colleges and universities in science labs and CDT workshops. It wasn't until I got to teacher training college in 1987 that I discovered my first Mac. On leaving teacher training I managed to secure a post training Mac software, and was employed by various Apple Centres in London, as both a software trainer and hardware engineer. I ran training courses on just about all of the proprietary packages from Adobe, Microsoft, Quark and of course Claris. Which is how I came across FileMaker, using and training version 2.1 at the time. I then moved to the south coast to work in IT support at The Body Shop. I gained great experience about all aspects of business whilst there, and worked with just about every department at some time on a data project - nearly always modelled in FileMaker. I was then persuaded by a FileMaker developer that I had met, to go it alone and hence formed Sigma (IT) Ltd. Six years on I have worked with all sorts of projects from many different industry backgrounds - primarily on the Mac platform (which I prefer), and developing a wide range of solutions. My strength as a developer is getting out of the client what it really is that they need, and working with the users of the system to get a solution that works within the current business model. My training and IT support background also allows me to assist the system administrators in their own development and understanding of FileMaker et al. I still love training users on FileMaker and Adobe products... and after all this technical time I still speak plain understandable English - even when dealing with a pretty technical issue .  |
